E-Verify is a U.S. government system used by participating employers to electronically compare information from a newly hired employee’s Form I-9 with records available to the Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration.
It complements the Form I-9 process; it does not replace it.
Official guidance states that an employer generally may not use E-Verify to pre-screen job applicants. The process is tied to new hires and participating employers must follow program rules, including employee notice and mismatch procedures.
myE-Verify Self Check is a free service for eligible individuals who want to check their employment eligibility information. Employers may not require applicants or employees to use Self Check.
