01

Define the whole decision

Base salary is one part of an offer. Scope, manager quality, variable pay, equity, benefits, flexibility, location, learning and progression can materially change its value.

Rank your priorities before the offer arrives. Separate requirements from preferences and identify the trade-offs you are genuinely willing to make.

02

Build a grounded rationale

A confident conversation connects the request to the role and market rather than to personal need.

  • Use reliable market ranges that match level, location and company type.
  • Connect your evidence to the highest-value responsibilities in the role.
  • Ask for time to review the written offer before responding.
  • Prepare one clear request and acceptable alternatives.
03

Keep the relationship intact

Express enthusiasm, ask precise questions and give the employer room to respond. Negotiation is a shared attempt to reach workable terms, not a performance of aggression.

If the answer is no, return to the whole decision. A deliberate acceptance or decline is more valuable than winning a single number and regretting the role.
